SUSTAINABILITY

  • The Hogless Roast is founded upon social and environmental principles that go far beyond legal requirements and continue to strive toward positive social and environmental change. As a completely vegan-based restaurant and caterer, reducing meat consumption and the food industry’s negative impact on the local, regional and global environment is at the forefront of our mission.

    We strive to:

Comply with and exceed all relevant regulatory requirements.

Continually monitor and improve our environmental performance.

Continually improve and reduce our environmental impacts.

Incorporate environmental factors into business decisions.

Increase employees’ environmental awareness and training.

  • Where we source the ingredients for our products is one of the most influential ways in which we can reduce our environmental impact. We are continually reevaluating where our supply comes from in order to find the most sustainable ingredients.

All of our products are entirely plant-based due to the catastrophic environmental damage caused by ever-increasing demands on meat production and agriculture. As a result, we use a plant-based meat substitute, currently soya protein, with which we build our main products around. The majority of soy production is currently used for animal feed in the meat industry so by choosing soy we are redirecting the current supply straight to feeding humans and therefore reducing the environmental impact without necessarily increasing fresh demand for soy production. Our supplier of soy protein have their own environmental commitments and through those we can ensure we are using the most sustainable ingredient available to us. They are committed to not buying soy from South America, in order to ensure that they don’t contribute to the deforestation of the rainforest, and the soy they purchase is grown in Europe.

  • We often get asked as vegans, “But what would happen to all the animals if everyone went vegan?” The answer, quite simply, is that this would be a slow process and therefore realistically, farmers would slow down breeding as demand for meat falls. Meaning that there would be no mass slaughtering, abandonment or uptake by sanctuaries.

We still like to do our bit for those sanctuaries that do such a great job in giving a good life to rescued animals. This is why we have partnered with our good friends at Goodheart Animal Sanctuaries. We’ve already donated £1000 towards the construction of their brand-new pig barn. Visit their website to see all the amazing work they do, not just in animal care but in community outreach and education.

  • We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive team that are well supported. We believe in equality inside and outside of the company and constantly strive to ensure that privilege does not impact our hiring practices. We, as all companies should, have a zero-tolerance of all forms of bigotry, including racism, homophobia, transphobia and misogyny.

We are also committed to paying our staff fairly, and as a minimum, pay all our staff the London Living Wage.
